フェロシリコンは製鉄業界に欠かせない脱酸剤です。製鉄では、フェロシリコンは析出脱酸と拡散脱酸に使用されます。フェロシリコンは、製鋼における合金剤としても使用されます。鋼に一定量のシリコンを添加すると、変圧器鋼の強度、硬度、弾性が大幅に向上し、透磁率が増加し、ヒステリシス損失が減少します。
一般鋼はシリコン0.15～0.35％、構造用鋼はシリコン0.40～1.75％、工具鋼はシリコン0.30～1.80％、ばね鋼はシリコン0.40～2.80％、ステンレス耐酸鋼はシリコン3.40～4.00％、耐熱鋼はシリコン1.00～3.00％を含みます。ケイ素鋼にはケイ素が2～3％以上含まれています。
さらに、ケイ素鉄粉は、鉱物加工産業では懸濁相として、また製造産業では溶接棒のコーティングとして使用できます。高ケイ素フェロシリコンは、電気産業で半導体用の純粋なシリコンを調製するために使用でき、化学産業でもシリコンなどを製造するために使用できます。製鉄産業では、生産される鉄鋼 1 トンごとに約 3 ～ 5 キログラムの 75% ケイ素鉄が消費されます。
